Overview

A scenic forest day trip in the cool Ngorongoro Highlands above Karatu. The Endoro Trail leads through dense montane forest where elephants regularly pass through (and have carved out muddy 'caves' on the cliff sides over generations). The walk ends at the spectacular Endoro waterfalls, cascading through tropical forest. A wonderful walking alternative to game-drive safaris, with excellent birding and wildflower viewing.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

7:00 AM: Hotel pickup in Arusha and drive west to Karatu in the Ngorongoro Highlands (approx. 3 hours). 10:00 AM: Meet your forest ranger guide at the Endoro Trail trailhead in the conservation area. 10:30 AM: Begin the 2-3 hour guided forest walk - keep an eye out for elephant tracks and dung, watch for colobus monkeys and forest birdlife (turacos, sunbirds, hornbills). Pass the spectacular elephant 'caves' - cliffs carved out by generations of elephants seeking minerals. 1:00 PM: Reach the Endoro waterfalls and have a picnic lunch by the cascade. 2:30 PM: Return walk via the same trail (slightly downhill, faster pace). 4:00 PM: Begin the drive back to Arusha. 7:00 PM: Drop-off at your hotel.
