Day-by-Day Itinerary

Early 6:00 AM departure from your Arusha hotel with a packed breakfast. Drive up through the Ngorongoro Highlands with a photo stop at the crater viewpoint (approx. 7 hours total including stops). Enter the Serengeti via Naabi Hill Gate and begin game viewing as you make your way to your central Serengeti camp or lodge. Check in and relax. Sunset drinks overlooking the plains, followed by a hearty safari dinner and overnight.

Dawn departure with packed breakfast for the best game viewing when predators are most active. Explore the Seronera River valley - the Serengeti's year-round wildlife highway and Africa's best leopard country. Watch for lion prides, cheetah hunting on the open plains and elephant families in the marshlands. Picnic lunch in the bush under an acacia. Afternoon drive continues until golden hour, then return to camp for dinner.

Morning game drive as you travel out of the Serengeti, stopping at the Olduvai Gorge museum to see casts of the earliest human fossils. Continue to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (approx. 5 hours with stops). Check in to a mid-range lodge with views over the crater. Afternoon rest, then an optional short walk along the forested rim. Dinner at the lodge with a chance to spot bushbuck grazing on the grounds.

Early breakfast, then the trip highlight - descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a half-day game drive on the caldera floor. Incredible wildlife density: lion, black rhino, elephant, zebra, buffalo and flamingo, often within a few kilometers of each other. Picnic lunch, then ascend in the early afternoon. Drive back to Arusha (approx. 3.5 hours), arriving by evening. Drop-off at your hotel or airport.

Best Time to Visit

Plan around peak wildlife, weather and price windows.

Peak season Shoulder / good Off-season

Long Dry Season

Peak
June – October

Peak game viewing. Animals concentrate around waterholes; thinning vegetation makes spotting easy. The iconic Mara River crossings of the Great Migration occur Jul – Sep.

Calving Season

Peak
January – February

The Great Migration calves in southern Serengeti / Ndutu. Dramatic predator action and excellent weather with surprisingly low crowds.

Short Rains

Good
November – December

Brief afternoon showers, lush green landscapes and excellent birding as migrants arrive. Migration herds move south. Lower-season pricing.

Long Rains

Avoid
March – May

Heavy rainfall, muddy roads, some lodges close. Beautiful green scenery and dramatic skies, but the most challenging time for safaris. Lowest prices.
