Day-by-Day Itinerary

Very early 6:30 AM pickup - prime birding hour. Arrive at Arusha National Park just 30 minutes away to explore three distinct habitats: the Ngurdoto Crater forest, the alkaline Momella Lakes and the open ashfields on Mount Meru's flanks. Target species include Hartlaub's turaco, silvery-cheeked hornbill, Narina trogon, African fish eagle and thousands of lesser flamingos on the lakes. Picnic lunch at a forest clearing. Late-afternoon return to a comfortable lodge in Arusha, dinner and birders' briefing.

Morning walking safari along the park's forested edge with an armed ranger - excellent for forest canopy species, including black-fronted bushshrike and Schalow's turaco. After brunch, depart for Lake Manyara National Park (approx. 2.5 hours) descending the Rift Valley escarpment. Late-afternoon game drive into the lush groundwater forest in search of crowned eagle, olive pigeon and the famous tree-climbing lions. Sunset over the lake from your lodge terrace, dinner and overnight.

A full day inside Manyara's mosaic of riverine forest, acacia woodland, open grassland and alkaline lake shores. Target species: yellow-billed stork, African jacana, pink-backed pelican, great white egret and the brown-breasted barbet. Mammals: elephant, buffalo, vervet and blue monkey. Picnic lunch at a lake overlook. Evening birding walk on the lodge grounds for owls, nightjars and flame-throated bulbul as the light fades.

Dawn birding session along the lake shore - the most productive hour of the day. After breakfast, depart back to Arusha with stops at roadside wetlands and marshes, ticking off any species still missing from your list. Arrive around midday (approx. 2 hours). Drop-off at your hotel or airport, trip list in hand (expect 150+ species across four days).

Best Time to Visit

Plan around peak wildlife, weather and price windows.

Peak season Shoulder / good Off-season

Long Dry Season

Peak
June – October

Peak game viewing. Animals concentrate around waterholes; thinning vegetation makes spotting easy. The iconic Mara River crossings of the Great Migration occur Jul – Sep.

Calving Season

Peak
January – February

The Great Migration calves in southern Serengeti / Ndutu. Dramatic predator action and excellent weather with surprisingly low crowds.

Short Rains

Good
November – December

Brief afternoon showers, lush green landscapes and excellent birding as migrants arrive. Migration herds move south. Lower-season pricing.

Long Rains

Avoid
March – May

Heavy rainfall, muddy roads, some lodges close. Beautiful green scenery and dramatic skies, but the most challenging time for safaris. Lowest prices.
